Brain injury in children, in plain words
A brain injury can come from an accident or fall, from a period without enough oxygen (for example after a near-drowning or cardiac arrest), from an infection, or from other illness.
What a child needs afterward depends on which parts of the brain were affected. Some children need a trach, tube feeding and seizure care; others mostly need help with movement and daily tasks as they recover.
What care at home often involves
- Trach care, suctioning or oxygen for children who need airway support
- Tube feeding and medicine schedules
- Seizure watching and following the seizure plan
- Positioning, skin checks and careful transfers
- Keeping therapy routines going between appointments, as the care plan directs
Every child is different. Your child's doctor writes the orders, and the care plan follows them.
Recovery changes the plan
Children can keep making progress for a long time after a brain injury, and their needs may drop or shift. Others have long-term needs that grow as they get bigger. Either way, the care plan and GAPP hours should follow where your child is now, not where they were at discharge.
Teens with a brain injury may move to an adult program at 21. GAPP ends at 21, and adult programs have their own rules and waits. The 21 Clock lays out what to do from 16 to 21.

Brain injury: questions parents ask
Can we set up home nursing before our child leaves the hospital?
Yes, the earlier the better. Ask the discharge planner or case manager to contact us, or call us yourself, and we will start gathering what GAPP needs.
Will a nurse know how to handle seizures after a brain injury?
Nurses follow your child’s seizure plan from the doctor. Tell us about your child’s seizures on the first call so we staff nurses who are trained for them.
What if my child gets better and needs less care?
That’s good news. GAPP hours follow medical need, so they may change. We keep you informed and help with each review.
