Yes, GAPP can pay for a trained aide to help your child with bathing, dressing, eating, moving and the routines that take hours every day. For children who qualify, Georgia Medicaid pays and your family pays nothing.

What a personal care aide does
- Bathing, toileting and hygiene, including incontinence care.
- Dressing and grooming.
- Help at mealtimes.
- Moving, positioning and transfers.
- Keeping to the daily routine in the care plan.
Personal care or nursing?
Personal care covers daily living. Skilled tasks like medicine through a tube or airway care need pediatric home nursing (RN and LPN). Many children get both.
Parents can be hired to provide personal care hours for their own child. Ava calls this Family Caregiver.

Who personal care is, and isn’t, a fit for
- A good fit
Children under 21 on Georgia Medicaid who, because of a medical condition, need hands-on help every day with bathing, dressing, eating, moving or toileting.
- Not a fit
- Babysitting or childcare without a medical need.
- Housekeeping for the rest of the family.
- Skilled nursing tasks. Those need a nurse.
Have this ready for the first call
- Your child’s age, diagnosis and Medicaid status (or that you’re applying).
- The name and phone number of the doctor who manages your child’s care.
- A rough picture of a normal day and a hard day.

Personal care questions
Does GAPP pay for a personal care aide for my child?
Yes, when your child qualifies for GAPP and the doctor’s order includes personal care. The hours are approved per week.
Can a family member be my child’s personal care aide?
A parent or legal guardian can be hired by Ava and paid for personal care hours through Family Caregiver. For other relatives, ask us, since the rules differ.
What’s the difference between personal care and nursing?

Does personal care cost anything?
Not for approved GAPP hours. Georgia Medicaid pays Ava directly.
