The 21 Clock: what happens when GAPP ends at 21 in Georgia, and what to do before then.

Why 16 is the right time to start
In Georgia, the IEP must include transition goals and services by ninth grade or age 16, whichever comes first, and update them every year. People found pre-eligible go on the planning list. Services are offered by greatest need (health, safety and caregiver support), not by how long you have waited.

What happens when GAPP ends at 21 in Georgia?
GAPP stops, and adult care comes from separate programs with their own applications. GAPP serves children under 21 (official wording: under 20 years 11 months). The 21 Clock shows which adult programs to ask about and what to do at each age from 16.
Which adult programs replace GAPP?
It depends on your child. ICWP is for adults with severe physical disabilities or brain injury: ICWP is for adults who apply between ages 21 and 64. NOW and COMP are for intellectual or developmental disabilities: People found pre-eligible go on the planning list. Services are offered by greatest need (health, safety and caregiver support), not by how long you have waited.
When should we start planning for 21?
By 16. In Georgia, the IEP must include transition goals and services by ninth grade or age 16, whichever comes first, and update them every year. If your child has an intellectual or developmental disability, applying to DBHDD early gets the review started.
Can we stay with Ava after 21?
