Why respite matters

Caring for a medically fragile child is a 24-hour job. Parents who never get a break burn out, get sick and lose jobs. Respite isn’t a luxury. It keeps the person your child depends on most able to keep going.

What respite at home can look like

  • A regular block each week while a caregiver is with your child.
  • An overnight so you can sleep.
  • Coverage for an appointment of your own.

Who this is, and isn’t, a fit for

A fit

Parents of children under 21 with medical needs who need planned breaks.

Not a fit

Emergency childcare for a child without medical needs.

Respite questions

Is there free respite care for parents of medically fragile children in Georgia?

Some Georgia programs fund respite, and approved GAPP hours can give parents regular breaks. What’s available depends on your child’s programs. Ask us and we’ll talk through your options.

Can I use my child’s GAPP hours so I can rest?

GAPP hours are for your child’s care needs. When a nurse or aide is caring for your child, many parents use that time to sleep, work or recharge.

Who stays with my child during respite?

A trained caregiver who knows your child’s care plan. For children with skilled needs, that means a nurse.
