What “congenital” means here
A congenital condition is one a child is born with. That can include differences in the heart, airway, lungs, digestive system or spine, and genetic syndromes that affect several parts of the body.
Some babies go home from the NICU with a trach, oxygen, a feeding tube or a long list of medicines. Others need care that grows more complex as they get older.
What care at home often involves
- Oxygen, suctioning, trach or ventilator care, as ordered
- Feeding tube care and careful feeding schedules
- Medicines on a tight schedule, including overnight
- Watching for warning signs the care team has taught you, and following the emergency plan
- Keeping track of many specialist appointments and orders
Every child is different. Your child's doctor writes the orders, and the care plan follows them.
From the NICU to toddler years and beyond
The first months at home are often the most intense. As babies grow, some need less support after surgeries or as their lungs mature; others develop new needs. Each change is a reason to update the care plan and the GAPP documentation.

Congenital conditions: questions parents ask
Can my baby get a home nurse after leaving the NICU in Georgia?
If your baby has Georgia Medicaid and a doctor orders nursing at home, GAPP can cover it. Ask the NICU case manager to contact us, or call us, before discharge.
Does my income matter if my baby has serious medical needs?
Many babies with serious medical needs qualify for Georgia Medicaid through the Katie Beckett pathway, which looks at the child’s needs. Call us and we will talk through where to start.
Can a nurse come at night so we can sleep?
GAPP decides the hours and when they fall, based on medical need and your doctor’s orders. Tell us about your nights on the first call.
