What G-tube care on shift can include
- Bolus or pump feeds on the ordered schedule.
- Medicines through the tube, flushed as ordered.
- Cleaning and checking the site.
- Venting, if your child’s plan includes it.
- Watching for signs the feed isn’t being tolerated and following the plan.
What you still do
You know how your child acts when a feed isn’t sitting right. Tell the nurse. You’ll also keep handling feeds during hours that aren’t staffed, and you’re the one who talks with the GI team about changes.
Who this is, and isn’t, a fit for
- Often a fit
Children under 21 on Georgia Medicaid whose G-tube is part of a larger picture of daily skilled needs.
- Usually not a fit on its own
A child whose only need is simple, stable feeds a trained parent already handles, with no other skilled care. Personal care or Family Caregiver may fit better. Ask us.
Have this ready for the first call
- Your child’s age, diagnosis and Medicaid status (or that you’re applying).
- The name and phone number of the doctor who manages your child’s care.
- A rough picture of a normal day and a hard day.
- Your child’s feeding schedule and formula.

- Who supervises the nurses on my child’s case, and how do I reach them?
- What happens if a nurse calls out? Will you tell me before the shift?
- How do you train nurses on my child’s specific equipment and orders?
- Can I meet or talk with a nurse before the first shift?
G-tube care questions
Does a G-tube alone qualify my child for home nursing?
Not always. GAPP looks at your child’s total daily skilled needs. A G-tube plus other needs, like frequent medicines, seizures or breathing care, often adds up. Ask us and we’ll talk it through.
Can the nurse give medicines through the G-tube?
Yes, when your doctor orders it and it’s in the care plan. Nurses follow the orders for how each medicine is given and flushed.
What if the G-tube comes out at home?
Follow the plan your child’s GI or surgical team gave you. Nurses on shift follow that same plan, which is why it should be written down where everyone can see it.
