What seizure care on shift can include
- Watching your child and keeping them safe during a seizure.
- Timing and writing down each seizure: when, how long, what it looked like.
- Giving rescue medicine only as the action plan orders.
- Calling 911 and you when the plan says to.
- Handing off a clear seizure log at the end of the shift.
Your seizure action plan is the rulebook
Ask your child’s neurologist for a written, signed seizure action plan and keep it where every nurse can see it. Nurses follow it exactly. If it’s out of date, get it updated before care starts.
Who this is, and isn’t, a fit for
- Often a fit
Children under 21 on Georgia Medicaid with frequent or hard-to-control seizures, often alongside other needs like G-tube feeding or brain injury.
- Usually not a fit
Seizures that are well controlled and rare, without other daily skilled needs.
Have this ready for the first call
- Your child’s age, diagnosis and Medicaid status (or that you’re applying).
- The name and phone number of the doctor who manages your child’s care.
- A rough picture of a normal day and a hard day.
- Your child’s seizure action plan and neurologist’s name.
- A rough idea of how often seizures happen.

- Who supervises the nurses on my child’s case, and how do I reach them?
- What happens if a nurse calls out? Will you tell me before the shift?
- How do you train nurses on my child’s specific equipment and orders?
- Can I meet or talk with a nurse before the first shift?

Can a nurse watch my child for seizures at night?
When your child’s doctor orders nursing and GAPP approves the hours, overnight shifts are common for children with seizures. Ask us how your hours can be scheduled.
Can a home nurse give rescue seizure medicine?
Nurses give rescue medicine exactly as your child’s seizure action plan and orders say. Make sure the plan is current and signed.
Do seizures alone qualify my child for GAPP nursing?
It depends on how often they happen, what care they need and the rest of your child’s needs. The doctor’s order and GAPP’s review decide.
